Patios, Pergolas and Outdoor Living in Scottsdale
In this part of Arizona the patio is the room people actually live in. It is where dinner happens, where the dog sleeps, where guests end up no matter how nice the kitchen is. Michael Fischer designs and builds those spaces as part of our Backyard, Patio & Pool Design work — patios and hardscaping, pergolas and shade structures, outdoor kitchens, custom pool installations, and full backyard transformations where the whole yard gets rethought at once.
Michael Fischer is a residential builder working out of 11153 E. Karen Drive in Scottsdale. We are licensed, bonded, and insuredwe hold Arizona ROC General Dual License #327028and we carry an . Quotes are free, and we would rather walk your yard and give you a real number than guess at one over the phone.
What Goes Into a Backyard Build
Some clients want one thing solved — more shade over the west-facing slab, a grill that is not on wheels. Others hand us an empty lot of gravel. Both are fine. Here is the range of what we design and build outside the house:
- Patios and hardscaping — new slabs, extensions, pavers, retaining walls and the grading that keeps water away from the house
- Pergolas and shade structures sized and sited for the way the sun actually moves across your yard
- Outdoor kitchens, from a built-in grill run to full counters, storage and seating
- Custom pool installations and the decking, coping and hardscape that surround them
- Full backyard transformations where patio, pool, planting beds and lighting get designed together instead of one at a time
- Sliding and accordion door wall systems that open the living room straight onto the patio and make the two spaces read as one

That last one is worth saying out loud: a patio is only as good as the way you get to it. If the connection between inside and outside is a single narrow slider, the patio stays a place you visit rather than a place you use. We design and install folding door systems and sliding glass walls, so the door and the patio can be drawn as one project rather than bolted together after the fact.
From Tape Measure to 3D Rendering
Outdoor work goes wrong when nobody draws it first. Setbacks, drainage, HOA review, pool barrier requirements, where the gas line and the electrical have to come from — all of that is cheaper to solve on paper. Our Architectural Design & Project Management is in-house, which means the person drafting your patio is the person who will be standing in your yard while it is poured.
- We walk the property and measure — grade, sun, existing slab, utilities, sight lines from inside the house
- We draft the plan in AutoCAD, in-house, and develop the floor plan around how you actually want to use the space
- You see the 3D renderings before anything is ordered or poured, and we change them until the layout is right
- We prepare the drawings for permitting and handle the submittals and approvals
- We build it, and we manage the trades, the schedule and the inspections through to the final walkthrough
Where We Work and How to Book
We build patios, pergolas, outdoor kitchens and backyards in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek, Rio Verde, Carefree and Phoenix. Each of those areas has its own review process and its own quirks — hillside lots in Paradise Valley, well and septic layouts out toward Rio Verde, HOA design committees almost everywhere — and we plan for that before the drawings go in.
We are open Monday through Saturday, 9:00am to 5:00pm, and closed Sunday. To get a free quote on your patio or backyard, call Michael Fischer at (602) 329-2517 or email hemimike@yahoo.com, and we will set a time to come measure.
